Engine Reconditioning Process At Engine Engineering
What Is A Reconditioned Engine?
Our competitors are frightened at the prospect having to answer this question to people with knowledge. That’s because their idea is to use a lot of technical words to make the average person seem impressed when all they do is the equivalent of replacing the battery in a previously broken tv remote, our process differs - professional engine reconditioning all done under the one (large) roof.
Here at Engine Engineering we take your engine apart, every nut, bolt, and bearing. This is to make sure that not only can we efficiently fix the problem, but to give the engine a new lease of life.
Every engine has its own special process, however, let us present a simplified version of the processes involved in reconditioning your engine and reinstalling it to your vehicle at Engine Engineering without the technical jargon.
Engine Engineering Reconditioned Engine Process
Stage 1
Engine Stripping
Engine Stripping
A experienced engineer will be assigned your engine. They will start by stripping the engine down, part by part, bolt by bolt, keeping a meticulous record of parts and locations. At this stage, an initial visual inspection is completed.
Stage 2
Engine Cleaning
& Decarbonisation
Engine Cleaning
& Decarbonisation
Next, in order to get all the used oil, foreign bodies and lubricants out of the parts we use industrial-class chemicals, parts, and pressure washers. The results are remarkable when compared to the parts that come into the wash department. This 4-step process (hot, cold, chemical, air) allows the engineer to inspect each component.
Stage 3
Component
Assessment
Component
Assessment
The engineer will now inspect the components for wear and tear. Some components require electrically sizing and true-straightness verified. Parts that require machining will be now passed to the internal machine shop and the parts team will check our stock and suppliers for the best prices for replacement quality components where required.
Stage 4.1
Precision Engineering
Cylinder Head
Precision Engineering
Cylinder Head
Every Cylinder Head will require, at the very least a skim (refacing). This process removes less than 0.1mm, allowing a smooth surface to surface contact. Other services may need to be completed to the cylinder head, i.e. reboring, valve seats re-cut, camshaft realignment. These highly technical processes can and will be completed to the highest standards where required.
Stage 4.2
Precision Engineering
Crankshaft
Precision Engineering
Crankshaft
The engine crankshaft journals may require grinding, at the very least all crankshafts will be polished. All crankshafts true straightness will be checked where offsetting may be required. Engineered Engines works with the narrowest of grinding stones making it possible to work on even the most technical crankshafts, i.e. Range Rover TDV6.
Stage 4.3
Precision Engineering
Block Reconditioning
Precision Engineering
Block Reconditioning
The requirements for a block change from engine to engine. The block may require:
- Block refacing (skimming),
- main bearings housing realignment (Line Boring),
- Cylinder re-boring
- Cylinder re-boring and sleeving
- Liner Flanges re-cutting
Stage 5
The Engine
Rebuild
The Engine
Rebuild
Once all components have been returned to the engineer they can start the rebuild. The engineer that disassembled the engine is the one who will reassemble it. To ensure quality in this process we supply our engineers with high-grade oils and assembly lubricates that are specific to the engine that is being built. Brand new bearings, seals, and gaskets and bearings of the highest quality will be used alongside access to the latest industry software.
Stage 6
Quality
Control
Quality
Control
We take quality control seriously after the machine work is done a different machine technician will inspect the parts thoroughly and measure to ensure everything was done correctly. This also applies to engines that are built - a separate mechanic will inspect to ensure that it was set correctly. If there is something wrong it will be caught and corrected before the engine is dispatched or installed by Engineered Engines. The QC team will warranty the engine once every department is agreed the required build quality has been obtained.
Stage 7
Installation Or
Dispatch
Installation Or
Dispatch
Depending on your requirements, the engine will now be prepared for dispatch, or made ready for installation in to the vehicle.
