PROBLEMS / FAULTS REPORTED ON BMW M47 ENGINES

At Engine Engineering we have worked on many M47 BMW engines over the years and have noticed a couple of common faults. There appears to be a turbocharger problem relating mainly to the E90 (BMW 3 Series 318d or 320d) where there is a blockage of the crank case ventilation causing the oil pressure to build up within the pan. The oil will not drain from the turbo properly because of the pressurised crank case.
Secondly, we have seen a few engines with catastrophic engine damaged caused the the timing chain snapping or splitting. If this is not caught early the engine can be a complete write off.
If you have experienced any problems with your BMW M47 engine please let us know so we can alert future owners.
