THE BMW N46 ENGINES


Produced from 2004 the BMW N46 straight-4 diesel engine which replaced the N42 engine. At Engine Engineering we know of two variants of this engine;

  • The BMW N46B18 Diesel Engine
  • The BMW N46B20 Diesel Engine

Both of these engines can be supplied, or supplied and fitted at Engine Engineering at competitive prices.

COMMON FAULTS / PROBLEMS / ERRORS WITH THE BMW N46 ENGINES


Here at Engine Engineering we keep track of any errors, faults or problems relating to the BMW N46 engine and can report the following:

  • Excess noise - A lot of drivers have reported that after 100k km they develop a strange noise coming from their engine. We have identified that this is a common problem with the timing chain or tensioner. If ignored, over time, engine damage will occur, we advise this problem is fixed as soon as possible.
  • High Oil Consumption - We have identified that, if not due to a leak, this is caused by sub-standard oil being used in the engine resulting in damage to the valve stem seals and piston rings. Use BMW recommended oil and change frequently to avoid extensive damage and large repair estimates!
