COMMON FAULTS AND PROBLEMS WITH THE BMW N65 ENGINE

At Engine Engineering we have had many BMW N46 engines reconditioned and through this we have managed to pick up a few common issues with the N46 engine, however if there is any issues that you aware of, it would be beneficial if these could be highlighted. Some common problems are noted below.

BMW N46 ENGINE COMMON ISSUES: High Oil Consumption

This fault tends to lie when a low quality oil is used, therefore we would recommend that the oil used its what is recommended by BMW or this may lead to the malfunction of the valve stem seals or the piston rings.

BMW N46 ENGINE COMMON ISSUES: Vibration

Another common issue is a vibration from the engine which may be caused by a need for the injectors to be repaired or replaced.

BMW N46 ENGINE COMMON ISSUES: Noise

Noise may become an issue in the BMW N46 engine, this is down to the timing chain or the timing chain tensioner. The problem derives from a stretching of the timing chain which tends to happen every 60,000 miles (100,000 km)
