2.7 TDV6 Engine Construction
The engine was originally constructed by Ford as a member of Ford Duratorq engine family. The block of this engine is a 60 degree V6 and is constructed from compacted graphite iron for lower weight. The cylinder heads are made from high strength aluminium and have 4 valves per cylinder. The additional futures are adaptations of this engine to use in Land Rovers when towing at low-speed torque range: single large capacity turbo-charger and engine driven cooling fan to improve desert applications. The engine is aspirated through an air-to-air intercooler.

2.7 TDV6 Engine Applications in Land Rovers
There are two known applications of those V6 turbo-diesel engines in Land Rover models:
2.7 TDV6 Land Rover Range Rover Engine Problems
This V6 2.7 turbo-diesel engine is one of the most popular diesel engines in the Range Rover Sport and Land Rover Discovery 3. Despite the fact this is a very well performing engine, there are some known problems which we can address for you.
2.7 TDV6 Range Rover Engine Problems
Some of the engines are developing a fault causing damage to the engine. The 2.7 turbo-diesel TDV6 engine is suffering from wear of big end bearings, those are sticking to the crankshaft and causing the engine to seize. In unlike situations, the pressure on the crankshaft is so big that the crankshaft is snapping, causing even more extensive damage in the engine block of the 2.7 TDV6 Land Rover. The snapped crank usually still has enough torque to damage main bearing caps.
This unlikely situation is the most extreme and painful for our clients as both the crankshaft and engine block are not serviceable which is leading to an increased price of the engine repair service.
In most situations, engine problems are solved by grinding of the crankshaft and installing of oversized bearings.

2.7 TDV6 Engine Damage
Another possible source of damage to the engine are scored cylinder liners and bend con rods, this damage to the engine is happening as result of turbocharger fault. Leaking oil from turbocharger to the inlet builds up of oil level in the intercooler and finally surge of oil to the engine makes the connection rods to bend ( similar way as when flooded by water engine is getting damaged by fluid - water ). The usual symptom of this is misfiring on one or more cylinders. Bend con rods are also causing the pistons to press on the cylinder liners and make the scores. In such cases, the pistons along with piston rings, the liners, and the connection rods must be replaced.
2.7 TDV6 Range Rover Engine Snapping Crankshaft Problems
Despite the really high torque and nice, smooth operation of this engine, the TDV6 has one more problem, slowly but surely becoming the issue which is hardest to resolve. The problem is in the way the TDV6 2.7 Land Rover engine crankshaft was designed by the manufacturer. While the performance of the engine is likely to seem ok - the crankshaft is bending. Beware of the cheap Chinese-manufactured TDV6 crankshafts from eBay. We have tested 3 of these in a row - none of them was working for any longer than 15 minutes on low rpm of the engine.
Reconditioning of 2.7 TDV6 Engine
The usual process is to grind the crankshaft to required dimension. The amount of grinding depends on the wear of the crankshaft, occasionally only polishing is enough.
These cranks are wearing more on big ends and less on main journals but both require grinding.
Another usual job is to insert new cylinder liners as a pair with piston and piston rings.
At Engine Engineering we take great care to reassure that released by us reconditioned 2.7 TDV6 Land Rover Engines are of the highest quality. To secure correct reconditioning process we sourced the engine bearings which are not for sale anywhere including main dealers. For peace of mind, we fit brand new oil pumps so the oil circulation in the new reconditioned engine is also brand new.
2.7 TDV6 Engine Fitting
Engine Engineering surely has become an independent specialist in this area. We are replacing the Land Rover and Range Rover TDV6 engines for both private and commercial customers. Worth to mention that the second include Land Rover main dealers.
The cost of re - fitting of the engine by Engine Engineering is much lower the main dealer charges and competitive on the market as such.
The service offered by us is a full comprehensive including and all consumables including timing belt kit, oil, filter, and coolant.
We will also check the turbocharger and replace if required.
