The Mercedes A-Class comes under the classification of a "compact car" and first began production in the year of 1997. Since its inception the car has gone through three generations of vehicle.

Mercedes A-Class, First Generation- (1997-2004)[W168]

When the first generation of A-Class was released it was instantly unique and distinct due to its tall body design and overall unique aesthetic.

The first generation of A-Class had the following engines available;
